I am Mark Coulter, I am 36 years old and I sing lead. The way that I got introduced to Barbershop is a bit strange. I was living in Regina at the time and every year there is a BUFALLO DAYS PARADE before the Exhibiton starts. The Fair comes to town and with it a parade. My 3 year old son and I were at the parade and a float with a bunch of men singing went by. I couldn't realy make out the song they were singing but on the side of the float was a banner ad that read..."IF YOU CAN SING CALL THIS NUMBER..." I called that number and had a very good chat with that gentleman who answered all my queastions. The following Monday I was a guest at there rehersal. I was a guest for the following 4 rehersals and then asked to join. I joined as a lead and very shortly after joining 3 gentleman that were looking for a Baritone in their quartet asked if I would consider switching to Bari and joining the quartet. I did switch and "Sound Investment" was founded in 2002. I moved away about a year later but the quartet bug was in my blood. I moved again and it brought me to Saskatoon. I quickly found the Chimo Chordsman and joined them as a Lead so that I could try to front a new quartet of my own. After about a year of asking people if they can sing I am glad to say that I am again in a quartet. I sing Lead with South of 60 and you would be surprised how difficult it is to name your group. After a few hours of brainstorming and a few declined applications from The Harmony Society, as names we had chosen were already being used, we came up with our name. It signifies the boarder between Saskatchewan and The Northwest Territories and the fact that we are all younger than the age of 60.

If you were to ask me why I do it I would tell you a few different things. First of all its the over tones and the undertones! When 4 guys sing together for a while and they begin to match vowels and pitches over tones can be heard and undertones can be felt. Its the undertone that vibrates in my belly when tone and pitch are matched perfectly that keeps me coming back.

Secondly, music has so many different aspects to learn about. The more I sing the more the learn about music theory.

Thirdly, I want to see how well I can sing. If we practice and reherse how good can we get? How well will we do on a competition stage? These questions will be answered over time...
